Staying En Route
For places to stay en route we tend to recommend the places we stay ourselves when we’re off the island. As mentioned before, Inveraray is a very convenient half way stage between Iona and the great conurbations of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The George Hotel is a bastion of the town with wonderfully furnished rooms and a superb restaurant. It is a quintessential Highland Inn, with lots of atmosphere – especially in the off season months when the open fires blaze in the bar and you’re sampling one of their traditional ales.
Closer to home, on the Isle of Mull there is the Calgary Farmhouse Hotel which is just north of Tobermory and is run by part of the same family who have the farm that produces the most amazing Mull Cheddar cheese. They have a great green ethos to their business as well as superb artwork in and around the grounds. The Tobermory Hotel is based in the town itself, overlooking the harbour and is renowned for its food and friendly service.
