We try very hard to offer a different manner of service. Rather than the stuffy silver service you can sometimes get while staying in a tartan bedecked Scottish Castle, or the sad seaside tearoom where the waitress sounds like Tom Waits, we hope to offer something altogether different. By treating our staff well, we hope that this translates to the customer. We want that warm Hebridean welcome that has never left this part of Scotland. Hang up your hat, relax after a long walk, feel informal and at home.
Saying this, if you do have any complaints, we want to hear them. And though it is surprising, we do, from time to time, receive a complaint, which we try to remedy as best we can. Here is an example of complaint we received several years ago:
"But we have already committed ourselves by mistake to the wrong hotel, and besides, we wished to be off as soon as wind and tide were against us to Erraid. At five, down we go to the Argyll Hoteland wait for dinner. Broth - 'nice broth' - fresh herrings and a fowl had been promised. At 5:50, I get the shovel and tongs and drum them at the stairhead till a response comes from below that the nice broth is at hand...At last in comes the tureen and the hand-maid lifts to cover. "Rice soup!" I yell; "O no! None o'that for me!"...How our faces fell! It was, purely and simply, rice and water. After this, we have another weary pause, and than herrings in a state of mash and potatoes like iron. They should have been sent to the Prussian front as grape shot. I dined off broken herring and dry bread. At last the supreme moment came and the fowl in a lordly dish is carried in. On the cover being raised, there is something so forlorn and miserable about the aspect of the animal that we both roar with laughter...It was so old it looked like it came from the Ark. To eat it was simply impossible...Nothing for it now but to order boat and bill. With more raillery we pay sic shillings for our festival and run over to Erraid, shaking off the dust of the Argyll Hotel from our feet."
